Village Life
Life for the Norman villager was very harsh.  Everyone, including children, had to work very hard from sunrise to dusk and there were few, if any, holidays.

Village Life

Life expectancy was short, infant mortality was high and many women died in child birth.

Gallows
The gallows were used for hanging perpetrators of more serious crimes, the victim being made to stand on a cart which was then drawn away leaving the victim to hang.  The body would have hung on the gallows for a long period of time as a warning to others.

Church
We know from the Domesday records that, as well as a Church here at the Castle, there was also a resident priest.  This suggests that Stansted was a Castle of some significance.  The priest would have been the only literate member of the castle community.

Church

The construction of the Church is from oak beams made into planks for the walls, with a reed roof.  You will notice the intricate carvings around the doorway depicting the Tree of Life and Christ in Majesty.

The Lord and his family sat in a pew at the front with the rest of the community sitting on benches at the back of the Church.  This is where the saying "the weak go to the wall" originates.
