Weaving and Dyeing House

Carpenter
The Carpenter was an important member of the Castle community, making a wide variety of both useful and decorative items.  His skills would range from crafting a wooden bowl on the pole lathe, to making bows for archers or even supervising the construction of siege weapons.

Wood was in abundant supply in this area, the Castle being surrounded by an oak forest in Norman times.

Weaving and Dyeing House
The weaving and dying house walls are constructed of reed, gathered from the river bed at the foot of the Castle; reed was also used for thatching.  Cloth for day-to-day garments was made and dyed in this house, with many of the women and children lending a hand.

Elaborate garments were produced for the Baron and his family, the peasants having practical and warm clothing.

Brewhouse
The Brewhouse was probably the most popular of all the Castle buildings.  Both wine and beer were produced - the grapes for the wine would have been grown on site from vines brought over from France at the time of the Conquest.  When ripe, the grapes would have been picked and put in the press.

Beer was made from barley and would have been much stronger than than today's ale, proving very popular with the Castle's inhabitants!
