Wood was in abundant supply in this area, the Castle being surrounded by an oak forest in Norman times.

The weaving and dying house walls are constructed of reed, gathered from the river bed at the foot of the Castle; reed was also used for thatching. Cloth for day-to-day garments was made and dyed in this house, with many of the women and children lending a hand. Elaborate garments were produced for the Baron and his family, the peasants having practical and warm clothing.
Beer was made from barley and would have been much stronger than than today's ale, proving very popular with the Castle's inhabitants!
