The Armoury is where all the weapons would have been stored for the Castle and it would have been guarded night and day. Upstairs is the Baron's bedroom, the only private place to which the Baron and his wife would be able to retire. You will notice a bed at the foot of the stairs. A guard slept here ensuring that the Baron had 24-hour-a-day protection. Displayed on the walls of the Grand Hall, you will see the shields of the 25 Barons that forced King John to observe the Magna Carta. One of the 25 was Richard de Montfitchet who lived here in 1215. |
